I have both and I'm considering taking and uploading videos from the trail. My question is this - I'm already going to be taking my iPhone to read, update the blog, look at weather, maps, stay in touch with family, etc.

My question is this: is the video quality of the GoPro worth the extra weight or should I just use the iPhone?

The video quality from the 6+ is pretty darn good. Yes, you'll need to be careful with the battery, but the same can be said for the GoPro.

I like a separate camera for stills, but if my choices were iPhone and GoPro or just iPhone, I would go for the phone. Put the extra weight into a battery charger thingamajig.

I wrote this a few days ago, I chose to use my iPhone 6 Plus I noted as well, and want to mount jn on my hiking pole as well, too:

Wanted to let the forums know that I've been experimenting with a means to get my iPhone on the end of my hiking pole, StickPic style.

I purchased (and subsequently returned) the GripTight GorillaPod from Joby (http://joby.com/smartphones/griptight-gorillapod-stand), and as of now I cannot recommend this device to anyone. I really did like the GorillaPod (octopus looking tripod grabber) that Joby is known for, but as for the means of attaching the iPhone to the tripod, it was lackluster at best and was absolutely not able to support the weight of the phone.

In the end, the device failed, causing my iPhone to commit hari kari from a height of approximately 10ft in the air. Luckily I was able to lunge forth and intervene before everything crashed to the ground.

-----

After stumbling upon this well-done YouTube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UH8xWAvsOGQ) from a British dude who reviews both the StickPic, the Joby and a few other devices, my newly proposed, and relatively well-researched solution, is a combination of the Glif by Studio Neat (http://www.studioneat.com/products/glif) (to attach the iPhone to a suitable threaded camera mount), and the UltraPod I by Pedco (http://www.industrialrev.com/ultrapod-i.html).

My needs are bit beyond the StickPic, seeing that I wanted the ability to set up the camera as a stationary camera-taking apparatus off of my hiking pole. And obviously, the need for an additional device to actually have the ability to mount the iPhone was required as well, something the venerable StickPic does not inherently include.

I also purchased a Lifeproof Nuud-esque case from Dog and Bone out of Australia and am impressed with the build quality of their case: https://www.dogandbonecases.com/

(currently the only option for waterproof cases for the 6 Plus right now)

Lifeproof has theirs available, now. I got the email a day or two ago. I'll look into what you mentioned, I'm leaning towards just using my phone. I'm not shooting for Hollywood, just looking for another avenue with which to capture my adventure.

My wife had a Lifeproof case for her 5s for hiking and paddling. We just got the 6 and need to get the case.

She attached a small wrist strap to the Lifeproof case by girth-hitching it to the attachment for the screw-in audio port cover. Less worry when leaning over the edge of a cliff or bridge to shoot photos. :)

For the 6 Plus? I'm on that email listing as well and haven't received anything. That, and their website still says it is isn't available yet.

Yep, it's for the 6 plus. I got the email 3-4 days ago and I think the title said something like "They're Finally Here!"

Good news, I wish they'd update their website.
