View Full Version : whats your favorite protein bar and why?
Well I am starting this because I have been looking for some protein bar's and I finally found one I like. The Huney Stinger Peanut Butter ones.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003GU0BM8/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I have to have a high protein diet due to me having a gastric sleeve done (not by choice mind you) but I haven't been able to find a single bar I like. I ran into this at REI and actually liked them. They don't taste like cardboard and actually taste like peanut butter vs. a protein powder. They aren't grainy or dry.
So what is your favorite and why?
I buy Quest Bars from my crossfit box. Most contain 1-2 grams of sugar, 20 grams of carbs and 20+ grams of protein at around 180-190 calories. They taste amazing, and the texture is good. Not like cardboard at all. Cookies and cream and vanilla almond crunch are my favorites. They aren't cheap, though. Typically around $25-$30 for a box of 12. I get them for $23 as a member. Hope this helps.
+1 for honey Stinger. Tastes great. you can also make your own.
Probar Meal is hard to beat. They're soft and chewy, very hardy with very little sugar. A little expensive though.
For what it's worth, the probars are now available packaged in half size bars ('bites') as well as the meal bars. Convenient if you want to snack more often in smaller quantities. Terrible in terms of extra packaging. Looked like the pricing was similar by weight.
Check out Greenbelly meal bars as an alternative to Probars. THe nutrition is very balanced and the taste and texture are way better than most bars. Especially the texture.

I also use the Quest bars. I love them. Tons of protein, little sugar, taste great. I have had the full gastric bypass surgery (I've lost 200 pounds!) and also need the extra protein.

Pro bar "meal bars" are a great source of energy & pack a load of calories! I carried them on my JMT hike & they were amazing!
Peanut M&M's
that isnt a protein bar...

The cheapest ones that sound like a flavor of cardboard that I may like.
I have been "sleeved" too....
I will have to try that Huney Stinger one.
The Quest Bars have too much of a "chewie" thing for me (I can't do Cliff Bars now either).
As someone who has to watch volume, I try to pack as much protein in to a bar as possible, while keeping the calories down. Basically, I look for 10 grams of protein per every 10 calories (or less). Meaning, a 20 gram protein bar should have roughly 200 calories or less.

I'm always trying different bars, and there's a lot of new ones on the store shelves. Most are either too sweet, too crumbly and fa apart before I take them out of the wrapper, especially the real nutty ones. Some taste like their aluminum wrapper, or like cardboard.
I keep coming back to ProBars. They're more expensive than most, but better than most.
Macadamia white and that coconut one from , yep, Clif Bars....never got tired of them plus they are only a buck from supermarkets !
that isnt a protein bar...
True. I stopped buying protein bars years ago. They are all over-priced, over-processed garbage. You should not view foods as the the whole food that they are, not their components(protein, fat, potassium, etc). So, while GORP is probably what I should be eating(or maybe apricots and almonds. GOAA?), I prefer the taste of the M's.
Is there a reason that you are in search of food in bar-form?
ugh, an extra "not" in there. proofreading will be next year's resolution...

I guess only have 9g of protein doesn't really qualify them, but my family likes Bear Naked energy bars. To make it better I just found a 12pk at Big Lots for $5.
They are 250cal and don't have any junk in them.

My favorite protein bar is bacon jerky and beef jerky, in that order.

Have you also tried KRAVE turkey and pork jerky? Good stuff!
Nature Valley 10 gram protein bars are quite good, or at least my pallet likes them 100% better than Clif Builders.

I can agree on the Builders, a little too power-barry for me.
whats your favorite protein bar and why?
Loaded question! Nutritional bars(not candy bars), 'protein' bars, some 'candy' bars, or however you wish to label all get thrown in together and often used interchangeably making the terms a mess to figure out. How someone like a body builder, or someone influenced by that activity, defines a protein bar, usually a chemistry like experiment super high in protein content, is going to be different than someone else like Shae who considers 6 gm of protein in their choice of Bobo's bar to be a "protein bar." As a bar aficionado in my own opinion a "nutritional" bar, 'protein' bar, 'fruit' bar, etc has to be considered beyond any one ingredient or nutrient. Most bars, of the 30 or so brands I find acceptable for regular consumption at least, aren't identified primarily as 'protein bars' although some of them do contain upwards of 15 gm protein in a 3 oz or less 'bar.'

My favorite comes from one of those home party companies that overcharges a bit, but I love them!
Isagenix IsaLean Peanut Butter/Chocolate Crunch
Why? The flavor. The flavor doesn't have even the least bit of a hint of hydrocarbon processed chemicals. And it does keep you satiated, as anything with significant enough protein will do.
Oh look, you can get them on Amazon (http://amzn.to/2foGVYi) now! Sweet!
Cliff bars. They have more of a granola bar texture. Macadamia flavor is good as well as the mint chocolate
Quest brand ... 30 grams per bar. Packs in more protein per ounce than the normal one. Until recently, it could only be found in Bariatric clinics. It has now made its way into Walmart as a general purpose high protein bar!

... and Larabars.
For protein I make my own dry mixture of Nido, instant breakfast, coffee and protein and add water.

Yes, i saw that you mentioned it earlier and looked it up.. i do much much better with a higher ratio of protein, and thought anout added that to my "collection". I also make my own granola st times.. heavy on several different kinds of nuts and seed, with oats, holden raisins, craisins, shredded coconut... whatever sounds good..

What was your final decision?
The Pea Protein is tasteless, has no sweeteners and dissolves with no trace. 20 grams of powder and 15 grams of protein. 75%.

I did the Vegan thing for about a year after being a vegetarian for a few year prior.
Chocolate milk was by breaking point, that and a whopper.

I used to be a big fan of Clif bars. I eat them for breakfast often when not on the trail. Most flavors were Ok but I basically ate them when I was in a hurry to get to work and had no time for a proper breakfast. they keep me from stopping for a biscuit. I digress.... I bought the Aldi version of the Clif protein bars and absolutely love them. They are, IMO, better than the name brand. Chocolate Chip are good but the Peanut butter are awesome. They are also a little cheaper as in less than $1 each. texture and size are identical. Flavor = more better. :D
On a Side note, my wife follows the Whole30 food plan. She eats RX bars. They are expensive and although the flavor is fine, they are hard to eat, for me. She likes them. Check them out of you are health conscious at all.

+1 on the Kind bars. Actual recognizable nuts, instead of a few ground nuts mixed in with fillers. I had shipped myself a few food packages, and the Cliff bars went straight into hiker boxes. The lesson learned for me was not to stock up on a bunch of any single food before the hike, because after your tenth one, you may absolutely hate it.

Might consider NOT seeking a nutritional bar with a super high protein content as that will likely take you into muscle building or weight lifting type selections. These can often taste like cardboard or more like candy bars some with high sugar content and ingredients that you might have to consult a chemistry textbook to pronounce and understand the consequences of consuming.
Easy solution to consider. Get a decent nutritional bar that isn't a candy bar or high sugar content bar. Dip it in a high content nut butter. Might taste better too. :-?

Ditto for Quest! Find them on Amazon!
Another vote for Larabars. They aren't true protein bars I don't think. They seem to hit the calories per oz ratio pretty well though, have decent ingredients I can pronounce and often go on sale for $1 per bar. The cherry chocolate ones are my favorite. They can be made at home pretty easily too.

I don't eat any commercially made "protein bars" or anything of the sort. I used to like power bars though they were brutal when they got too cold. I did used to buy the Builders Bars for my son as they contain 20g of protein.
