While I was getting excited about a "relatively" low snow year for a "relatively" easier SOBO start in June, based on what it's looking like in Washington, snotel tells me we're at average so far for Montana:

ah well, better water sources.

That is compared to 1981-2010

There isn't much snow.

The numbers you want is snow depth for your hike.

Glacier National Park has two or three live "cams". That helps.

This isn't a very low snow year for the CDT in Wyoming. ftp://ftp.wcc.nrcs.usda.gov/data/snow/update/wy.txt
Looks like Yellowstone basin is 100% and Wind River basin is 92% It does look like the desert is at 75%, which may mean less water in the springs and ponds.

Snow conditions relative to the CDT can be found here:

For snow depth:
http://postholer.com/gmap/gmap.php?trail_id=2&depth=1

For snow water equivalence:
http://postholer.com/gmap/gmap.php?trail_id=2&swe=1

Conditions compared to the average for the entire trail (requires login):

There's a whole slew of other snow/weather map overlays on the gmap links above. Choose what you want from the 'Map Skins' list box.

I'm not even going to look until May.... :) Hardest thing for some folks to do as they want/need(?) to have everything figured out long ahead of hiking but this is what I would do too. Started CDT SOBO from the Can Border 2010 on June 23 not seeing much of terra firma which was still under many ft of snow until East Glacier. Saw maybe 60% of the ground through Bob Marshall Wilderness that yr too.

Going through the Bob in a high snow year is magic. We went seven days without seeing another human being or even human tracks. Talk about feeling like you are really in wilderness!
