"A through-hike (a hike of the full-length variety) or even a shorter-hike is both fulfilling and rife with dangers."
As endearingly silly as that statement sounds when you consider the statistics, the selfish part of me says "right-on!" to anything that could potentially reduce numbers of hikers.

Though potentially annoying, the more people who come to the trail increases the number of people who will grow into care taking the trail through a variety of different voluntary efforts. We need new volunteers annually as experienced, and long term volunteers start to winnow down. If one wants to be concerned about the AT, look at volunteer attrition and get involved somehow.

Awesome post. I guess the the "tongue-in-cheek" part of that kindergarten lesson was taught the day you were out.

Well I would agree... having been a maintainer since 1988, that's before Donde was even in Kindergarten.
