I am ready to buy a new three season rain jacket/outer layer. My requirements:
-water repellent
-comfortable
-packable (not ultralite, but lighter than my 10 year old Goretex 2 pounder!)
-hood
-pit zips
-Sold by REI (I have a gift card and dividend check totaling $200, which will defray or cover the cost).
I hike the AT 2x per year, in April and in November, on the southern third of the trail for 60-70 miles at a time.
I really like what I read about arcteryx.
Anybody have any thoughts?

Marmot Precip is all of that, and a good value.
Arcteryx makes bomb proof albeit expensive shells. I have one that has been to the Alaska range 3 times and 1 trip to the Andes, along with some winter trips in Maine and NH. Like I said expensive but it has taken a beating. For 3 season and light weight (ie AT thru) I've had really good luck with the Montbell Versalite but I don't expect it to hold up the way the Arcteryx did.

I'd take the precip. Dirt cheap and meets all those needs.
Another vote for the Marmot Precip...I own this jacket. Got it on sale from REI and it has never let me down!

Both the Precip and Torrentshell are great options and are very similar.
If at all possible try them both on, they do NOT fit the same.
Arcteryx requires robbing a bank before buying. The Marmot Precip is great.

Sierra Designs now has rain chaps and a great top for a total of about 220 to 230. Perfect for backpacking. Check them out.

Those rain chaps look pretty cool. Only 5 oz. and -- given your name -- I guess you know what you are talking about!
PappaG, good to see you are still lurking around WB! I second the Marmot Precip vote. I have used mine for about a year now in light and heavy rain and have been pleased with the performance. It also meets your requirements of moderate price, fairly lightweight & packable, pit zips and sold by REI (get to use those dividends!) Lots of good choices and options out there. Good luck and hope to see you on the trail soon.
