This is really bugging me...
On my 2011 hike, I bought a giant "energy bar" at Mountain Crossings. The only other place on the trail that I was able to find them was at NOC.
Does anyone happen to know which bars I'm talking about? Do you know the name?

I think I eat one of those over the course of 2 days once. Definitely got a couple of meals out of the thing. Don't remember the name, but I think it was locally produced. I guess you could call down there and ask...

Yeah, I think I will call down there.

I got two meals out of them too. I seem to remember that they had them near the cash register. I'm heading out on another long-distance hike this summer and would love to get my hands on a few more of those!

"Colossal Bar"? Probar "Meal"?

"Colossal Bar"? Probar "Meal"?

IDK.... Doesn't sound familiar. I'm going to give them a call today - I'll post it here if they can give me the name.

Big Sur Bar. Talked to the gal at Mountain Crossing, she says the website is www.bigsurbar(dot)com. :)

I can't help with your search except to give a HUGE vote for Boone Barrs made in Banner Elk, NC. If the folks at Mountain Crossings don't have them, they should. Buy local. You can buy them online. Google Boone Barrs
Good luck.

I carried the Probar "Meal" bar on my JMT hike last year, I swear it's the only thing I needed to carry & delicious

Not sure how one of these would be better than 2 pop-tarts when comparing. Pretty much same nutrition except for preservatives, etc.

Poptarts: Less fat (-2 gm), MUCH less cholesterol (- 9 mg), more carbs (+12 gm), more sodium (+3 mg), MUCH cheaper (38 cents per poptart vs. $3 for one bar).

I don't think I could just eat half of a 5 ounce bar as well. Maybe there is a much larger version? Still, I'd like to try one, if on sale.

Here's a review I found online - gives you an idea of the size of these things! http://www.ingredientsofafitchick.com/2014/06/14/the-big-sur-bar/

I remember buying and eating one when I passed through there. Even for a big guy like me, it qualified as a meal.

www.happymountainfoods.com
Web page for Boone Barrs.
Grabbing two random Barrs from my stash and reading the label:
$1.99 each at Earth Fare.
2.25 ounces per bar.
Coconut Almond: 320.5 calories per bar.
Walnut Dark Chocolate Cranberry: 315 calories per bar.
So....
4.5 ounces total.
635 calories total.
$3.98 total.
Made by folks who are just a skip and a spit from the AT.
"All natural whole food energy bar. "

Big Surs are 3x200 cal servings. How did it taste? I was going to order some but with 6 dollar shipping I figured getting a dozen would be the best buy.

We are probably just going to hike around Neel's gap next weekend and pick a couple up at Mountain Crossing to decide.

Big Sur Bar is correct.

Big Sur Bars are definitely on the pricy side....12 bars for 100 Bucks! then add shipping....WOW! I'll stick with my 'dollar Clif Bars', I can get 8 bars for one Sur Bar!

Plus it is so hard when you're hungry to eat just half a bar...But that's just me!

I ate a ton of those on the PCT and just bought 4 cases for the CDT this summer. Pro Bars are what Clif Bars want to be. :) The best price I found was here: http://www.allstarhealth.com/f/pro_bar-whole_food_meal_bar.htm.

$24.89 for 12, $5.95 flat rate shipping no matter how much you buy and no sales tax.

I tried 2 from Mountain Crossings about two weeks ago. The Original flavor and the Blind Date flavor. I found them too sweet for me. But give'em a try.

Anyone who backpacks a lot ends up eating every energy or granola bar out there, and I've been thru many and gag on a few, namely Clif bars.

And thank ye boys for the Boone link and the Big Sur link---neato. Any new bar ideas out there are welcomed. The Big Sur bar though looks to be fairly loaded with cane sugar which ain't my favorite trail food.

While we're on the subject, let's make a personal list of the Mighty Bars---

Back in the 1980's me and my buddies would carry out these things---Guru Chews.

For years we carried out these things in several different flavors. If you can tolerate dried milk, these bars pack a punch with alot of calories (400?) and a good amt of protein.

On one of my last trips I tried some Hammer gels and a new probar product at top left. The usual probar is at the bottom although I'm burned out on the Superfood Slam variety and now favor the Propar peanut butter and almond crunch.

The is part of my food load for a Mt Rogers trip and Larabars figured highly in the granola bar equation. I still like larabars---cashew cookie and peanut butter.

On another long trip to Mt Rogers and I layed out some neat stuff including a Dale's raw protein bar. Anyone try them?

That's 12 of each flavor. The 12 pack is $35.40
