Glad all are ok.
Cynical side of me says two adult sons apparently bailed and left their dad. One made it, one didnt. None were prepared to spend night in cold rain on trail.

Im sure that rocky section between thunderhead and derricks caught them by surprise, hardest part of AT in park. I dont recall it having good camping areas either, just 3 steep rocky ups and downs.

Also getting discussed over here: http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php/110484-Injured-Hikers-in-the-Smokies where a link to a trail journal is giving a bit more info that the news stories seem to have.

Based on the trail journal, the dad just couldn't go any farther so the sons (son + son-in-law) tried to go on to find help... but one of them injured his knee and couldn't go any further. The other son make it to Spence Field shelter seeking help. Hikers soon found the injured son and helped him make it to Spence Field. Dad took longer to find because he was off the trail curled up under some bushes trying to stay warm... failing miserably because he was cold and wet with only marginal gear for the conditions. Hikers found him and did what they could to get dad warm (perhaps saving his life) until rangers arrived to take over.

While the news story says only two were "rescued", all three were evacuated by rangers... just the one that made it to Spence Field apparently didn't need medical attention once the rangers arrived and might have been able to hike out on his own... but he was evacuated with the son with the injured knee.

I am pleased to see that there are still people in this world who would risk their own safety, well being, and convenience for someone they never knew and likely will never see again.People like that are heroes but likely never think of themselves that way.But for them there would have been at least one fatality. And they did it in spite of someone else having made what turned out to be a big mistake to press on while under equipped.
