Can anyone recommend safe parking at Rockfish Gap?

I wouldn't park at the gap itself. The only existing service there is a single hotel, and its reviews (and residents) seem pretty scary. You'd have to see the area to believe me -- burned out structures, graffiti, etc.

You can park right off the BRP in a small pull out or below the old burned out Howard Johsons. The old Inn at Afton above the parking is a place to avoid (sad, but 25 years ago it was great). I work section of the trail just south of there and consider the area safe. PM me for more info.

I forgot about that pullout on the BRP - that did look like a decent place to park. If you are going SOBO, watch carefully for the turn off the BRP, I missed it my first time (of course I was hiking during the tail end of a winter storm warning...). Actually, my profile picture is from that hike (view through icy trees) -- probably should update it with something more easily recognizable.

You can park at the Rockfish Gap Park entrance office located at the top of the hill in the old hotel parking lot. Just tell the ranger inside what your plans are.

Here's my observations on Rockfish Gap from last summer:

If you arrange ahead of time (one day is fine), you can park your car here
http://www.rockfishgapoutfitters.com/
for free, for just about as long as you need to.

You can then-
1) arrange for a shuttle to your starting point (like I did)

2) take a taxi up to The Trail at Rockfish Gap.
3) call one of several trail angels for a lift to there.

4) hitch a ride (shouldn't take long).

when I was up there last October, the Chamber of Commerce folks in Waynesboro told me section hikers could park safely at the Waynesboro Police Dept parking lot, in town. I'm heading back up late this week to do another AT section hike, maybe see some WBers up that way.
