Going to be in Phoenix next week for a job interview and would like to check out the AZ trail. What are some good nearby day hikes?

I like the Maricopa.gov site for short day hikes.
I hike Usery Pass Park when I get a chance. You can do a couple of hours on easy trails or the 7.2 mile Pass Mountain Loop.

Weavers Needle.
Camped up on the high saddle once.
Awesome place. (no place for a tent on that little saddle, just a sleeping bag, and even then it slopes a bit)
Have fun. Love the Supes!

We did a really nice loop day hike around Weavers Needle several years ago.

A real classic is the Siphon Draw Trail from Lost Dutchman SP. It's a tough climb that requires a little scrambling. But it might be pretty hot and there's no water up there now. The Peralta Trail gives easier access to the Superstition ridge with a great view of Weaver's Needle.

One place to easily check out the AZT would be from US 60. Frankly the AZT is sort of featureless on both sides of the highway until you get in 5-6 miles. But you could hike a fraction of a mile south, turn east, and climb Picketpost. It's similar to Siphon Draw but a little easier. There's a mail box on the summit for "air mail."

Another access to the AZT is from Hwy 87, the Bee Line. Parking and access is a little difficult there, there's no good trailhead, and again, it's pretty featureless for miles in each direction.

The classic day hikes in the urban area are Camelback and Piestewa Peak. They are very crowded. South Mountain Park provides a little more solitude and it's a huge area with pretty good hiking close in. Same with the McDowell Mt Preserve. The Cave Creek area is very nice too and there's a user fee. Usery Pass is an excellent idea. There's lots of good hiking in the area.

Good luck in the interview.
