Ive seen several articles and claims of offering the weather forecast on demand by sending a txt message with a zip code, but all have led to either dead ends or what appear to be spam traps.

Anyone know of a "working" free service?

Thanks!

Haven't found one that works any more either. If you do find one, please share.

I pretty sure they're legit.

I pretty sure they're legit.

WU is very legit, but that service appears to be for owners of weather stations to receive data from "their" weather stations via text message.
I am looking to get weather forecasts for any area, not just my personal station.

I would be curious how they generate current weather stats from shelters, I don't recall seeing instrumentation at many of those.

Here's what I want, and I believer what the OP was referring to:

Text a zip code to a number.
The number replies with the forecast for that zip code.

It's sometimes a pain to know every zip code you're going to hike through but it used to make getting the forecast possible for any phone capable of sending and receiving texts.

There was some discussion in the JMT Yahoo group last year on getting weather updates sent to your Delorme inReach. I didn't follow the discussion closely, but basically, you sent a text from your inReach, which automatically includes your location, and received a weather report text back. Unfortunately, I don't recall where to send the text...

I have 2 weather apps on my Android smartphone; Weather Channel and Weather Bug. Weather Bug gives me the weather forecast for the nearest town. I've used it extensively in Michigan and Florida for backpacking. It has saved me from the worst of seal storms.

With Weather Channel I have to provide the Zip code.
