First time AT hiker. Fluent in the outdoors, great fitness. Starting to plan a 7 day (20 miles/day) hike from Damascus, VA, up and over Mt. Rogers and to Roanoke. Looking to gain some perspective on this route. Thanks.

The trail distance from Damascus to Roanoke is 258.7 miles. Seven days of hiking would be 37 miles per day. Twenty miles per day for seven days from Damascus would get you to about halfway between Bland and Pearisburg. This resource might help with your planning:

Or buy a guidebook. These are two good ones:

We'll be section hiking Craig Creek - Bobblet's Gap Memorial Day Weekend.

Perhaps we might cross paths.

That stretch is lot harder then you'd think. That's about a 3 week hike, not a 1 week hike. But if your in truly great shape, used to hiking and going up and down steep hills all day and have a light pack, maybe 2 weeks.

I just got back from doing Dickey Gap to Damascus. That section was pretty easy southbound, as Damascus is at a low elevation and you must climb Whitetop and Mt. Rogers, both the highest peaks in VA. going north. Also great views and scenery through Grayson Highlands State Park and it's a nice place to soak in the views and see the "wild" ponies. Take it easy the 1st few days and then start high mile days past the highlands area.

Gorgeous, yes.....easy, no. That's a great section...worth the time to enjoy all it has to offer. Damascus to Atkins is about 75 miles, lots of knee busting up hills. Good luck, you'll love that part of the trail.
