Finally, this years Hard Core is almost here. After the end of a long winter, it is time to rehab some trail with TN Eastman Hiking Club (TEHCC)! The 15th Hard Core will begin on May 17 and 18 (Sunday, Monday after Trail Days) and conclude on Tuesday, when we transport back to the trail. Sometimes the last thing done is the most fun and Hard Core is always a great way to cap off Trail Days.

This years work site will be near Doll Flats. It is trail North of Hump Mountain just before exiting NC for the last time. Work Crews will be spread out over approx 2.5 - 3 miles. The main task will be rehabbing existing trail. There are numerous roots to contend with and, of course, we won't call it a day until the last rock has been moved and put in its final resting place.

Sign-up for Hard Core will be on Friday and Saturday of Trail Days in Damascus, VA. Bob Peoples and I will be at the ATC booth in town. Sign up early as the last hikers might not get a spot. 50 current year hikers and 50 previous year hikers will be the final tally.

Hikers should finish their partying early and be well rested, as they will be picked up on Sunday morning in Damascus, VA and transported to the trail head near Doll Flats. They will need to bring all of their gear. On Monday, hikers will be transported to the work site for another day of work and then on Tuesday they will finally be returned to wherever they were on the trail.

Dinners on Sun and Mon will be provided at the end of the day. You will need to have your own breakfasts, lunches and snacks. Lunches will be eaten at the work sites. You will also want to bring water/something to drink to the work sites (bring PLENTY of water for the hikes too). Lodging will be at Kincora and Braemar Castle in Hampton, TN, the last major trail town in TN.

For those with a vehicle, we may need your assistance in transporting hikers to and from the work sites and then back to the AT (on Tue). We usually have work gloves available. However, sometimes it is difficult to get a matching pair . . . you might pick up a cheap pair prior to. Sturdy footwear (no sandals) is a good idea too.

Last, but not least, we look forward to seeing you this 15th year of Hard Core!

(You might have noticed a theme with my post . . . you may have heard a rumor or two . . . and you might have read the recent article in AT Journeys. This is indeed the Final Hard Core with TN Eastman Hiking Club. Basically, everyone has done such a great job in the previous 14 years, that we have run out of work for 100 hikers at the same time. If you do come to Trail Days but are unable to stay for Hard Core, Please stop by and say 'Hello' during sign up!)

See you on the trail and at Trail Days,

Thanks for the heads up Mtn Squid. I thought last year was the last for some reason.

My schedule is kind of up in the air right now. If not, have Bob move a boulder for me.

If Carl, Bob, and crew still want to do Hardcore, they can always come help the Mountains to Sea Trail. lol

There was an excellent article on the Hard Core in the most recent issue of The ATC Journeys magazine.Yes it was an excellent article. Baltimore Jack wrote it and I provided a couple of the pictures.

We've been busy doing the final preps. My shoulders are still a bit sore from hauling logs up Hump . . . everything should be in place and ready for this years volunteers!

See you on the trail,
