I have started a new facebook group page titled "I believe in LNT on the Appalachian Trail and in my community."

Here is the group description: "PLEASE SCROLL THE NOTIFICATIONS TAB DOWN AND CHOOSE ALL NOTIFICATIONS! This site is about sharing stories that relate to leave no trace and discussing plans to help teach leave no trace. No arguing here about the concept. It is for positive reinforcement of Leave no trace practices. If you would like to post a story that helps show reason for leave no trace join us. If you have ideas how we can teach LNT join us."

I have also started a facebook campaign concerning LNT from that group. I am looking for people willing to share the campaign posts on their timeline and on timelines of groups they have joined. The more it is shared the more chances to affect change especially if your page is public. We need to reach the general public not just attempting thru-hikers.

I'm down with this. I'll add it to my NH backpacking gear swap. With the huge increase in the number of people escaping into the woods its time to help the newbies figure this stuff out. Pay it forward I guess. Someone had to teach me at some point.

We need to reach the general public not just attempting thru-hikers.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/IbelieveinLNT/ I'm unable to access page. If the intent is to reach the general public, perhaps consider changing the the privacy setting, as not all are on Facebook as members.

Just joined the group, great idea. Packed out well over 5 lbs of trash this weekend between Neel and Tesnatee.

However this one litter deserves special recognition:

31388

I would have taken more pictures but my head was spinning. That is trash from a backpacker who has the TIME and ENERGY to make custom meals and package them with vacuum sealing, but not enough of either to pack out the empties.

^Kudos to Chris Jackson for cleaning up after others!

I've been thinking lately about LNT education of the on-the-trail face-to-face type:
I often see damage where people have cut across switchbacks. If I thought it was just kids, and if their parents were correcting them, it wouldn't bug me as much as it does. But I'm pretty sure it's often adults, setting the bad example for their kids and others.

I recently encountered three backpackers who had casually dropped their packs at an AT intersection in the Smokies to explore a half-mile side trail. This was in an area where shelters were closed due to recent active bear encounters.

Understanding that these (and others like them) are localized incidents with a mostly localized impact, but with a cumulative effect that is potentially impacting future access to Katahdin, how should we go about interacting with those we meet on the trail who we witness leaving much more than a trace?

I'll check it out rocketsocks. I thought I had my settings to public but will make sure.
