It appears bears have taken over another section of the AT and the dreaded canisters are now required. How long is this section, and are their reasonable breaks so that a thru hiker can get thru it without needed to sleep here, and thus not needed to carry a bear can.

Is that article correct? I have seen the USFS recent posting of requirements for Shining Rock and adjacent areas but haven't seen anything that affected the AT.

The OP and "article" (web page) are wrong. But thanks to our Moderators, the thread was moved from "AT-General" to "Other Trails," where it belonged in the first place.

Here is a link to the USFS alert:
http://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/nfsnc/alerts-notices/?cid=stelprd3832543

Basically, the Graveyard Fields area is temporarily closed to camping and bear canisters are required to camp in Shining Rock Wilderness, Black Balsam, Sam's Knob and Flat Laurel Creek areas.
