ALPS Mountaineering Ultra-Light Air Pad for 42$ on steepandcheap. Is this a good buy, how does it compare with with the bigger $$$ brands?

It's a bit on the heavy side to be called "Ultra-Light" at 24 ounces. Many people use the Thermarest xLite's which are ~12-15 ounces depending on size.
For the money, if you don't need as high an R-Value, I would suggest the Klymit V2. They're $60, and 17 ounces - and it's the most comfortable mat I've ever used (and I've tried nearly everything on the market). I've only taken mine down to around 40º so far, but I still didn't feel any cold from the ground.

The Klymit pads are an awesome value. If you need more then maybe look at the Big Agnes Air Core pads. You can get away for under $100 and get 3.5" between you and the ground. Makes for very comfy sleeping. I do better on my BA pad than I do on most beds.
