Black flies aren't really an issue here in CT.

They have not started in the Wilderness, I was out there Friday and had no trouble at all. It's been warm and dry.
They have showed up here in central Maine but not too bad yet.

They're out in upstate NY - I got a couple of bites this past week - so I would imagine that MA and VT are the same. Most years, they're at their worst from now to about Fathers' Day.

Tadpole mentions blackflies in his post from May 8th. http://www.trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?id=493636 He was hiking from Ten Mile River Shelter to Silverhill Campsite.
Personally, I have been noticing them showing up a few more each day. Definitely not bad yet, but the snow did just leave. I tried asking one how it was doing. It told me it would answer my question over lunch. Needless to say, I declined the offer.

Huh, I was out last weekend and we had zero issues with them. Only a little north of where Tadpole was too.

Up in central Maine right now, just north of Bangor - no issues yet.
Nimbus, it is now mothers day and the black flies are just waking up. Wait a month at least if you don't wanna deal with them.
I was out at various locations and altitudes in Mass on Sat. They are here and there, and not particularly in a biting mood. It was quite tolerable, if a little annoying. It's been pretty dry this spring, so that may be reducing the numbers. Still plenty of time yet.
