I'm planning on hiking in Shenandoah around the weekend of October 3rd. For those who live close by or who are familiar, is that too early or too late for the best fall colors? Im hoping for some green trees and I really don't want trees to be shedding a lot yet. So roughly what's the best time? This picture is ideal 30725

Here is the 2014 foliage report for Shenandoah NP -- http://www.nps.gov/shen/planyourvisit/fall-color.htm
It may help to give you some idea.

Peak color time varies by which part of the park you are in but I would say the weekend of Oct. 3rd would be to early for the best colors no matter which part of the park you are in. Just going by my experiences.

Keep in mind that Fall color season is also peak visitation season as well - most of it on skyline drive to be sure but plenty of folks on the trails as well.

On average the 2nd week sees near peak color while 3rd week is prime peak.

Below are pictures I took on 10-11-2011 in different parts of the park. I hope this gives you an idea of what to expect. Of course the weather could change the timing and intensity.

Thank you for the suggestions! I've booked my trip for mid October because of work. I'm just hoping for some good color around October 15th.
