I think the most difficult part of preparing for a thru hike (for me), especially coming from a military background, is getting out of the survivalist, fend for yourself, self-sufficiency mindset.

My entire career was spent in the infantry, where the mantra "two is one, and one is none" was repeated like it was heaven-sent.

Obviously we can't physically pack like that, otherwise we'd be so loaded down we'd get to the first shelter and throw in the towel. But what I have found directly helpful is the years of planning and preparing for various exercises and operations that I've done.

Either way, thank you people of WhiteBlaze for helping me transition from my old mindset to this new, different way of thinking. Change is good, and is required for growth.
