Greetings all,
A buddy and I just completed a short hike from Clingman's Dome to the Road to Nowhere, staying at 69 and 71. Both nights we saw ghost fireflies. These don't blink, they just stay glowing about a foot off the ground. Really neat to see.
If I had to guess, they are just now starting to come out and the population will rise as the moon phases towards New and Waxing Gibbous (or now until around the 27th or 28th). After that the mating season is over and I'd guess the full moon would be too bright to see them. A few years back my wife and I saw them at Standing Indian Campground in Macon County, NC. At any rate, if you are in the area, be sure to stay up a little later when its good and dark and you might see the little guys.
