cell phone coverage from Sam's Gap to Erwin, TN?

I normally don't take a cell phone on hiking trips,, but my wife & I are expecting a referral for adoption, & I wanted to give my wife the ability to speak w/ me (I'd call her daily). I'm planning on a trip from Sam's Gap to Erwin, TN,,, & just wondered what the reception was like on this stretch? Thanks for any input. :sun

depends on what cell phone company ya use,i use cingular,i have used mine
from gergia to newhampshire no problem,no long distance,no roaming,plus i have a great dopplar weather radar program on my phone:cool: neo

I had a cell signal when on Big Bald...got a free cold coke and candy bar there too. ;)

I also have Cingular, but found it very difficult to get signal in that area last November. There is signal south of Jerry's Cabin, given you pass a few hundred yards of all sorts of antennas and have much ridge walk. Jerrys Cabin has virtually no signal. The peaks and ridges have some signal, but it can be touch and go.
