I bet these start showing up next year. It's a straw that filters as you drink and lasts for 185 gallons; only three dollars too. Pretty good deal.

It was named as one of Time magazine's best inventions of 2005.

The military issued us something similar to these in the jungle a long time ago. They weren't rated for 185 gallons that's about all I remember about them. Small, lightweight and really easy to use.
The only problem I would see with these for backpacking would be how to get the water into a container of any kind to carry with you.
But if they are really light they'd be pretty cool to carry along to suck water from the source.

How does the iodine work so quickly? Most water treatment using iodine requires a 20 to 30 minute wait before consuming the water, longer if the water is really cold.

The filter part of it takes out the larger cysts, like Giardia and Crypto, which takes iodine 20-30 minutes to bleach. The remaining viruses are very sensitive to bleaching, needing simple contact in general.

This is being made and marketed for Third World and disaster relief situations, where clean water, prevention of dysentery and polio are very vital. It will be interesting to see if it is sold in the States, as it will further impact the filter follies with a cheap competition for those who feel it is necessary.
