My son and I are going to be doing a 4 day backcountry trip in Shenandoah NP in about a month. We will be flying into Washington, DC and then driving to the Southwestern part of Shenandoah NP. Given that Esbit fuel tablets are not allowed in checked baggage, I'm going to need to find some somewhere after landing in DC and before heading into the woods. I see that there is an REI in Fairfax, VA. But that will be a little bit out of the way. Does anybody know if there is a place to buy fuel tablets within the park, or nearby? There are apparently camp stores at some of the camp grounds, but I don't know what kinds of things they carry. Are there phone numbers for the camp stores? Maybe I should hit the REI in Fairfax, just to be on the safe side?

Thanks,
Bryan

The stores in the park are pretty sparse unless you need a t shirt or a book!!! I looked at the map and I'd do the REI in Fairfax, then 66 to 29 , 211 to Luray and then 211 crosses the park.

It depends on what you consider nearby ;)

If you are starting at the south end of SNP, Rockfish Gap Outfitters is just a few miles from the south entrance towards Waynesboro, VA. 540-943-1461

I agree with this. The REI is right off of 66 (take Monument Drive Exit on 66, left onto Monument Drive, REI is 100 yards ahead on your left), get back on 66 (from another entrance but easy to find), and take 66 to Gainseville, VA and take 29 to 211 as stated above. When are you doing this? I am located off 29 in Gainseville area and would be willing to help out anyway that I can if needed.

You could mail it to yourself down there, many people using esbit do mail drops to themselves.

Some of the camp stores have propane gas canisters, I don't think any have Esbits. Since you have a car available, definitely swing by REI.
