God forbid anyone would have to be without phone service or internet for any length of time.

Not sure about ATT. Verizon was pretty good on the ridges between Bland and Pearisburg.

Sorry Francis it's just that some of us have loved ones who care about us and are concerned for our safety! I guess you're not so lucky!

Not Sprint. :)

Of course as you get close to Daleville every carrier works - it's right on I-81.

Ive had good luck with Sprint in that area. Often on Roaming, but still having service, certainly on the ridges.

Me, my parents are very old and if something happens with them while I'm on the trail, I want to know about it. Someday maybe we'll be lucky enough to be devoid of small thinkers who think they know what is important or unimportant for other people.

Until that time you'll have to contend with those of us who do.

The A.T. is a wilderness experience. If you want to be assured of constant contact with the wired world, there is a simple solution: stay out of woods.

There are a number of factors i considered when deciding to carry a cellphone on the trail. My family and friends who graciously make it possible for me to section hike was the major factor. The opinions of internet backpackers has never been one a consideration.

I've found that I can get cell reception on clear mountaintops and ridge-lines most places, even if I have had no service most of the day, an overlook almost always has enough service to at least send out a text or make a quick call. I mention this because I've found it to work in many places that I was assured I would have no phone reception.

A gentle reminder: This is the straight forward section. The OP was asking about cell phone coverage.

This is not the thread (or forum for that matter) to debate how appropriate a cell phone is in the woods.

If you have some information to add about how good a carrier's coverage may be, please add the info.

Otherwise, move along. :)

I switched from Verizon to T-Mobile and was able to say I could not call for days on end due to my provider. Last year on Verizon I was expected to be reachable all the time, what a pain in the butt.

Why does this ALWAYS have to happen? There's the option- contribute or skip ahead. I'm sure if you fell down and snapped a femur you'd appreciate someone with a cell phone calling 911.

A real hiker would eat that leg, fashion a peg out of a nearby stump, and hike on!
