I never use sunglasses on AT but for my September JMT hike plan to bring for obvious reasons. I wear costas normal due to there superior polarized glass lenses. However they are heavy to hike in all day due to glass lenses. Any cheap light wt sunglasses y'all recommend? I tried a pair of cheap safety glasses we use at our equipment yard but they don't cut it....

When I hiked the Grand Canyon, I simply used the same sun glasses I use from driving... a pair of $10 sun glasses from WalMart. I try to get polarized if not mirrored to block a lot of light. I also try to make sure they are the type that sort of wrap around your eyes and sit close to your face (cheeks, eye browse, etc) so that you don't get much light to your eyes around the edges.

I wear Coyote brand sunglasses. Can't find them every where - online http://www.amazon.com/Coyote-Eyewear-FP-39-Polarized-Sunglasses
They are light, cheap (like $35) and very comfortable on the face. If I get 9 months out of them its worth every penny. I wear them everywhere, everyday and all day long.

Maybe it's a thing about living in the south but I can't wear anything other than my costas.. I'd sacrifice some weight in order to have costa-vision lol

check the walmart fishing glasses in the fishing equip. they are light, cheap, and work pretty darn good.

about anything as long as it blocks a lot of light.
Julbo seems to be popular with the crowd that hikes above treeline , especially with snow.

My prescription Oakleys did fine. 0.8 oz.

I have prescription Julbo Colorados made by Opticus (http://opticus.com/). Polarized. Expensive but worth it to me. What sucks, however, is that my distance prescription seems to have changed (become worse) in just two years and I'm going to have to get new ones at some point relatively soon. The bulk of the cost was the prescription lens rather than the frame.

I have a lot of luck using tinted industrial safety glasses. http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B002A5BPK2?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00. Many folks don't realize that sunglasses are rated for different UVA/UVB ratings, industrial safety glasses are generally rated for the most severe exposure a lot of cheap sunglasses may not be. They also have great fogproofing and tend to be a lot better built with better optics than similar cheap sunglasses for less than $10 a pair. I use this style as they are fairly open for ventilation but have quite a bit of wrap around.

There are some really good inexpensive polarized glasses on the market. REI has them. My Costas are too heavy for the trail... plus I don't want to worry about crushing/losing them. I use the Costas for flyfishing or being on the water....
