View Full Version : June 20/21 Water Report: Wilbur Dam, TN to Damascus, VA

Did the stretch between Wilbur Dam in TN and Damascus,VA over a long weekend around June 20-21 and have the following report on water availability. Water was everywhere it was supposed to be.

Spring ~1.7m South of Vanderveeter Shelter: Spring just off the trail on the east side. Spring had steady flow. Dipped water from pool.

Spring ~.1m South of Vanderveeter Shelter: Based on accounts of trail being very steep, did not use it an instead packed in water from previous source for the night.

Spring 3.8m North of Vanderveeter Shelter: Small, shallow pool. Picked up a lot of floaters.

Spring/Stream .2m South of Iron Mountain Shelter: Steady flow of water on spring on east side of trail. Go down to second access point and some PVC has been laid on a ledge to assist with water access.

Spring at Nick Grindstaff memorial: Little flow, but a good pool. Dipped water from pool.

Stream .8m South of TN 91. Several footbridges and streams with good flow available. Not deep though and did not see a pool dug.

Spring at Double Springs shelter: Easy access spring 100yds from shelter with a steady flow of water out of a plastic pipe.

Spring at US421/Low Gap: Steady trickle from pipe in ditch by picnic table. Dipped water from pool.

Spring at Abingdon Gap shelter: Very steep trail .2m behind shelter. Steady flow of water. PVC has been laid in the flow to assist with access.

Spring 1.6m North of TN/VA border. Did not go down to this spring, but some of hiking party did and said there was a pipe and steady flow.
