i like this tarp so well i am selling my jacks r better tarp:cool: neo
neo,
You got a weight for us yet?
Shipping weight is 1.5 lbs. Sales person said tarp is wrapped in light plastic, then boxed, so packaging should not add much weight. Therefore, tarp must weigh just over a pound. Jack's tarps do have adequate coverage, but if one wants more, then add some weight. I do like that camo!
Just recieved the tarp today. I like the tarp, the camo is really cool. Neo....thanks for the heads up.
Somebody weigh this thing! I'm on pins and needles.
Rambler, I don't trust that weight estimate. I just received 2.5 yds of 1.9 ripstop today. That should weigh under 8 oz. It came in just a Tyvek envelope, but the shipping weight listed was 3 lbs.

Yeah, I want to know how much this tarp weighs. I wouldn't mind picking one up myself if it's not prohibitively heavy.

It will be heavy whatever the weight is. Probably over 20 ounces.

I'll guess 21.7439 oz. Closest without going over wins a lollipop.
I think it weighs 23 oz., including it's stuff sack. I set it up with my HH in the wooded area of back yard, excellent coverage and the camo blended quite well even with most of the leaves gone. Definitely stealthy.
Patrick,
What is prohibitively heavy?
Prohibitively heavy is in direct proportion to how cool I think the camo looks. Looking good so far.
9 yards, 1.4 per yard plus sone ties.... I say 15 oz.

This is how well the camo works. Look at the center, I'm 40ft away looking through some trees with 75% of their leaves gone.

Yes, camo does work. However, when I am backpacking on hiking trails I don't really see the advantage in my hammock (or tarp) being hard to spot, actually I prefer it being visible. I'm not trying to hide from anyone near my campsite and when hunters occasional walk through the area (and they have several times when I have hammock camped off trail) I want them to recognise that I am there and associate any sounds or movements I may be making with me. It also helps me 're-find' my campsite when I go away from it for whatever reason.
So, just what is the advantage in being hard to see along backpacking trails where no one is pursuing you and what you have to worry about is being mistaken for something else? Especially in hunting season where it is advisable to wear bright orange. The last hunting accident with a hiker along the AT in Georgia that I recall involved a young woman going off-trail away from her campsite to squat behind bushes to take care of personal business at dawn. I figure she didn't bother to wear any bright colors as she was trying to not be visible (of course) and was mistaken for a deer. After that I wear my red jacket on these nature runs during deer hunting season and throw it on top of either the bush I am behind or one nearby.

really cool pics:cool: neo
There is no advantage. It's just a relatively inexspensive, quality tarp solution. And as previously stated, the camo does look cool. If you want to be seen more easily, tie some of that bright orange plastic strips to the ridgeline tie outs. If you want to be more stealthy, don't.

Okay, fair enough.:) I realized that I had forgot to mention that a lot of us use high visibility guylines on our tarps just before I saw your post. I think every cord, rope or guyline I use is selected in part by how visible it is.
Back when I used a Hennessy Hammock I once had hunter's (father and son I think) that came through my camp at first light. I was on an old overgrown logging road. I was already awake and heard their footsteps crunching leafs. As they got close I heard the son ask the father "What is that?". The reply was "I think it is a hammock". About 5 seconds later there is this thump where one off them hit one of my lines... I don't recall whether it was a suspension line or a tarp guyline, but it made an impression on me about visibility.
Different strokes for different folks... enjoy your tarp, it does look neat.

Whistler, I have a question for you: If you can't be seen, are you really there?

Answer: Only if you want to be... said the snake on the edge of the trail.

For some reason this camo stuff reminded me of a few things, one was when someone once said that they weren't any snakes along the trail... because they hadn't seen any, of course. I pointed out to them that just because they didn't see any snakes doesn't mean that snakes didn't see them.
That camo tarp would be 9'x9' by its rectangular dimensions, right or 9 yd^2?

The camo tarp is 9'x9'. The stuff sack is made out of the same material as the tarp and it comes with 4, 11-1/2 foot guylines with guyline tensioners. The guylines and tensioners are black, so the whole package is definitely low vis. I agree that it is a good idea to make yourself visible during deer hunting season, while hiking or camping, but in the off-season I'm not concerned about it.
For us non-hunters, when is deer season?
Deer season
Bow season Sept 10-Oct 7
Muzzle loaders Oct 8-Oct 14
Gun season Oct 15-Jan 1
Bear season Nov 7-12
Dec 5-17
This is in North Carolina.

which means 21.8 oz
my sniper parka sleeping bag wieghed in at 2 lbs 14.6 oz
not bad for excellent budget priced gear. neo
neo, sounds good. Thanks a lot for getting that weight. Does that include the guy lines?

I was looking at everyone's tarp picks. On my HH, I am going to start trying the tarp directly to the trees as opposed to the hammock. I think that this will make setup and takedown easier, especially in the rain. It will also do away with the need for self tensioning modifications to the tarp.
For the other people who do this, do you run a new ridgeline across the 2 trees, or do you tie the ends of the tarp directly to the tree? Trying the tarp directly to the tree would do away with the need to attach it to the ridgeline, and you would be able to use less rope.
Neo: Any idea as to waht the cold weather rating is on the sniper parka/sleeping bag?
i can go way lower than most people, right clothing and pad 20 degrees for me,for most people mid 30,s:cool:

i always tie off to tree's with my tarp,in the rain first thing i do is get my tarp up,and when breaking camp last thing i do is take my tarp down:cool: neo
But I borrowed some ideas from the Speers Hammock website, and came up with this:
http://community.webshots.com/album/237103382ByZIeG
Only problem is that the down migrates with gravity, and the top gets cooler as the night wears on. The tighter the bag fits around the hammock and user, the less this happens. A synthetic bag would cure the problem altogether.
