Nice story, Hikerwife.

Hey, what's the status of your husband's thru-hike? I haven't seen an update in a long time.

There are no EX-Marines. Just former Marines.

Another piece of misinformation in the article, where he says only two had previously crossed the bay (LaLanne and Alberto Christini). Although he could have been talking about the article that inspired Mr. Platt (which at the time of printing only two may have done), but I feel it should have been shown that more people have crossed. At least one I know of did so recently, which can be read about here: http://people.aol.com/people/articles/0,19736,1100456_1116136,00.html

There are no EX-Marines. Just former Marines.
Just inactive reserves.

I don't understand the point of this. Is it to mimic what a prisoner on Alcatraz might have done? Because a prisoner on Alcatraz would not have had a wetsuit. And if not, then why the shackles?

Well if you read the article, he says in his own words:

he wanted to do something to show that Marines and other service members who are missing limbs can still do amazing things...

..."I already have a disability with one eye, and (tying my hands and feet) was another symbolic disability," he said. "I wanted to show that Marines and sailors or other people who lost limbs, you still can do anything that you set your mind to...

I've never understood that Ex/Former distinction. Don't they each mean exactly the same thing?
