I currently use the Sawyer two-bag, full-filter setup when I hike. In addition to the 'dirty' and 'clean' bag, I carry two 1L plastic Smart Water bottles.

In an effort to pare down my water filtration setup, I saw duplicity in carrying (and filtering into) a clean bag, then draining the clean bag into the water bottles.

I've ditched the clean bag, and have fashioned a connector that allows me to connect my filter directly to my water bottles. I know they sell these, but this was just as easy to make with the extra parts that the two-ba system comes with.

It's a little bit of weight saved, but more importantly it's space saved (and arguably less to keep track of - an additional bag/set of hoses), while still giving me the ability to haul a bit of extra water from a site if required.

What is your total weight? I'm curious how it compares to my setup using a Sawyer Mini, an Evernew bag, and a Platypus Hoser (hose replaced with surgical tubing for lighter weight and easier to pack). I'll have to weight my setup when I'm home.

You can much lighter and simpler if you want. A Sawyer mini ($20) with a short piece of tubing and a female water bottle adapter ($8?) weighs 2 ounces. You can then attach most water bottles/bladders with that bottle-type opening (I like Evernew bladders for the correct/perfect matching threading to the Sawyer) on both ends and gravity feed (I have a short length of guyline on the dirty water bottle to hang it in the air).

Same can be done with the full-size Sawyer for better flow-rate, and less worry of having to backflush (but with either system setup like this you can back-flush just by squeezing the clean water bladder back through the Sawyer).

Just food for thought. It's also one single item you have to carry (the Sawyer with adapter screwed onto it) + water bottles or bladders.

My system of a 2L Evernew dirty water bag + >2L Platypus clean water bag + Sawyer Mini + Platypus hose connection with 2-3' of medical tubing with string to hang the dirty water bag and small sack to store the hose in is 6.1oz.

9.15oz, most of that for the full-sized Sawyer filter.

Here's a pic of my setup being tested flow rate in the kitchen
