View Full Version : Renewing DWR on down bag after washing

Hoping someone can help me with a little confusion I have:

I just washed my WM bag with Nikwax Down Wash. Washing and drying went very well -- the bag is clean and back to a great loft. But I am unclear as to whether or not I should refresh the DWR for the outer shell, or if the Down Wash was sufficient for that? Anyone who has used Down Wash on their bag, I would appreciate any info.

Thanks.

Dip the end of your fingers in some water and toss some drops onto your bag. If the drops bead up, the DWR is still OK. If they spread out, the DWR should be renewed. I use Nikwax Downproof after washing and rinsing my WM bag while it is still wet. I believe the bag has to be wet for this, but you can check. You can also use a spray on DWR product on your washed and dried bag.

Why do you need DWR on a sleeping bag?

Why do you need DWR on a sleeping bag?

Because water happens.

Not if you are careful.
If concerned spray it with some nixwax or similar.

Thanks. The sprinkling water bit should have been a no-brainer for me. Duh!

I am indeed careful about water happening, but I like knowing that the DWR will help with just the lightest splash-back or condensation, etc.

I do have some Nikwax Tx. Direct spray; I just didn't want to waste the product or my time if it wasn't really necessary.

Thanks.
