We had some flash floods in AZ this weekend. Kind of awesome.

These are from Wickenburg. Note that the place and the 'river' channel were bone dry before the storm passed through.

Close to 40 years ago I backpacked up into the black canyon area from Phoenix. I set up in the dark off the trail and awoke to find I was in a dry wash. Young stupid luck that it wasn't raining up north.

Interesting. Black Canyon had a flash flood last year which washed away homes. Here's some photos - don't have any nightmares now about how it could have been you lol.

Man, I just cringe watching those people get so close to the water. Not a very good idea.

When I was about 7 years old -circa 1960- my dad grabbed me one day and said get in the truck. He drove down to a wash area I played in all the time with the other ruffians. We get there and he said just watch. In about 15 minutes this wall of water comes screaming around the corner about 2 feet deep. If a munchkin like me had been standing down there it would have been nip and tuck. Then he says to me. This is why I tell you to watch out when there are storms in the area. He was good for stuff like that. Scare the crap out of me was one of his main methods of instruction. One reason I am a good hiker is that he took me hunting in the wilderness when I was the same age and would just walk off in the snow into the mountains and leave me. I don't know how many times I was trudging thru snow up to my knees following his footsteps and had not seen him for an hour. Windy as hell, sometimes below zero, snow everywhere - I learned to walk fast.

Big flash flood 2 days ago right along a northern section of the AZT. Check the video and the pics. Isn't it amazing the velocity of the water. And the power to move boulders the size of cars. Best stay out of the way I think. I'll be out on that part of the AZT in about 3 weeks. Bet parts of the trail are just gone.

Watch the waterfalls start on this one below. When that water hits the road it is the video above. And that moves the boulders.
