Hey everyone. I'm looking for a tent for my husband and me. He's 6"2 and I'm 5"8. We would like to start trail hiking, need a light weight tent, room enough for a football player and his wife. We were looking at the Marmot Limelight 3p tent and the Marmot Tungsten 3p tent. Would anyone suggest trail hiking with a 3 person tent or are there any 2 person tents that could work as well? I've already done research on a lot and now am looking for a more seasoned opinion.

Lightheart Gear Duo. TarpTent, several models come to mind. StratoSpire 2, Double Rainbow and Double Moment, and the 3 person models off the top of my head.

Two person tent's work fine if you are only sleeping and like being close and don't mind keeping your gear outside in the vestibules. Three person tents are more comfortable to spend time in in bad weather and may be 15% more for 30% more space. REI makes a Halfdome 2+ tent which is a nice middle ground, but not as light as some of the other tents out there that are made of lighter materials and proportionately more expensive. For the money, the Halfdome 2+ is hard to beat. If you want to go lighter, something like the REI QuarterDome 3, or Big Agnus Copper Spur 3 or Fly Creek 3 are all lighter roomier and more expensive. . . then there are the TarpTents and other cottage industry single wall type tents that have more condensation issues but weigh even less.

There are Tarptents and there are Tarptents (half of our shelters are double wall, the others are hybrids)
The Tarptent Double Moment is a two wall tent ,long enough for 2 seven foot person (52 oz all up)
The StratoSpire 2 is also a double wall with a bit more floor space than some and large vestibules too (46 oz if you use trekking poles , otherwise add 8.6 oz for substitute poles)
The Cloudburst 3 can take a liner, in effect turning the hybrid (single wall plus mesh doors) design into a double wall design, (52oz as hybrid add about 5oz for the liner) takes 3x20" mats so some room left inside (86" long floor ,vertical ends so all usable)

I'm over six feet and my partner is 5'4". After using a lot of 2- and 3-person tents, we love our Six Moonds Designs Lunar Duo. The interior volume is amazing, and it's plenty long enough for a tall person. Two doors, two vestibules, plenty of headroom.

iM 6'4" and use a Tarptent strato2 as well as a Hilleberg Anjan 2GT. Love both of them TT weighs about 2.5 and anjan about 5lbs but the extra space and durability is well worth the weight gain. If you wanted to go lighter and are comfortable in the great outdoors you could go the tarp route and perhaps a mesh room but there isn't really any privacy in this option.
