I'm totally new to hiking and I'd like to do the AT. I have no illusions, its a difficult thing. I'm looking for any information, references, threads, or anything else that will give me knowledge on how to be successful, safe, and just enjoy the outdoors

Do not wear jeans and do not wear cotton. Wear moisture wicking athletic material in all you can find. Wear Fleece layers for cold weather. The key is to get the most durable, functional, and lightweight EVERYTHING that you most possibly can. Jeans are like carrying a brick, especially after they get wet.
