Given the history of this sort of thing, there should be some guidance to minimize the chances of this happening. Maybe there is/was. Personally, I avoid old growth trees when pitching my tent. Old growth trees present this type of danger as well as being a poor locations to be in a lightning storm. The huge roots provide a wide network for grounding. Young trees are more durable in high winds, don't have large dead limbs, and minimize lightning strikes. All of this may have been irrelevant in their location and weather. Very sad and tragic.
