Wish there was some way to spin this story in to a lesson for new hikers/campers. Ya know, the ol' saying, "A fed bear is a dead bear." But even if the narrative was broken down with the example of habituation from this case, I doubt may people would hear the message since the bear probably doesn't have a Twitter account.

Well, good for him - God loves the Infantry!

You will be happy to learn that Benji emerged from the fire fight without a scratch.

For anyone keeping track, so far it's Marines 2, Bears 0 :)

The first point was scored back in 2007 http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=3306263

Back in 2011 I met a retired Navy Seal near Sunfish pond who swore he got into a fight with a bear in the area a couple years prior and fought the bear off using his rather stout and heavy wooden walking stick. His story was clearly imbellished a little bit as all good trail stories are, but I had no doubt that he was telling the truth.

Be careful of Sailors telling stories:D

Fairy Tales begin with “Once upon a time…”

Sea Stories begin with “This ain’t no Shiat!”

As all good squid stories are? :D

I know someone of this breed and his best stories all start off with, "No s**t, there I was..."

When a tale begins with those five words, grab a beer, kick back, and prepare to be amazed! :p

Does this earn him a combat badge?

Outstanding, Marine! You've been awarded the B.I.B. for meritorious actions under claw.

On a sidenote, that is meant to be completely humorous...

(I don't want to be on the bad side of anyone that beats up bears!)

I saw the television interview with the marine in question who said that it was his dog who made the difference in the outcome of the fight.Glad they both. escaped. Was surprised the bear wanted to take the door down though.Lucky bear because at that point I know people who would have shot him through the door.............
