Cindy, the ALDHA Companion editor reports:
Two thousand one hundred five point two miles.
Three tenths longer than last year.

If the trail gets longer in a time period within the 12 months since you started your hike, do you have to go back and hike the section you missed? :-?

I'm assuming the trail gets longer/shorter due to reroutes?

Boy, I'm in trouble. I started section hiking in '73 when the AT was less than 2,160 miles!

Nah ...it's kinda like college. You're only responsible for the mileage that was listed in the catalogue when you began. Besides, what if they rerouted a section and made it shorter ?? Would you have a credit balance that could be applied to a longer reroute in the future ??

I know, I was trying to be sarcastic- while poking some fun at the purists who actually might do just that. Not that there's anything wrong with it....:D

I't partially my fault. I worked that re-route this year and figured I would make it just a hair longer this time. Just to piss off those thru-hikers that hate hiking and are only trying to get a patch. :datz

I can hear them now:

"0.2 more frigging miles. What jerk decided to put this dang trail over this stupid hill?"

I hope they all get shin splints. :sun

The reroutes I don't like are the ones over big white rocks to make it more about climbing than hiking. Outside Hot Springs is one area. The blue blaze "bad weather" trail is the old AT. The white blaze "good weather" trail is the new AT.

Oh but the rock scrambles are so much fun!! And in some places (... like most of northern PA ...) both the "good weather" and "bad weather" trails are more rock climbs than anything else ...

Ok- we'll shorten the trail in Pennsylvania for you,
but that means we'll re-route it thru even rockier & nastier sections
and throw more rocks on the trail like we've been doing!

You could be in big trouble. You might have to start all over again.
