Seeking advice on 3 -5 day section hikes in Virginia as shakedown/preparation for 2016 thru hike. I recently hiked VA 603 Fox Creek to Damascus. Great hike, beautiful country and several lessons learned about me and my gear. I live near Roanoke and have hiked VA 621 through Petites Gag, but seeking other ideas/options. My plan is to hike in October.

Thank you in advance for your recommendations

If doing this, I recommend starting a bit further south to include Sinking Crreek Mtn and a little further north to include Tinker Cliffs.

My wife and I did VA-42 to Daleville in a 4-day trek. This includes all three of the Triple Crown. Great hike.

Did Rt 56/Priest Mountain to Rt 60/Long Mountain Wayside, with a side trail to Crabtree Falls. Did 30 miles over a long weekend with a few climbs and descents.

I'm planning the RT 42 to Daleville hike myself, but I only have 3 days/2 nights. Was thinking of trying 15, 20, and 15, each day, respectively. Is this doable or would my fiance murder me?

How about Rt. 621 to Pearisburg? 51 miles, you pass the Keffer Oak, get good views from Wind Rock. Some up and down but also ridge walking.

Drive down to Damascus and hike a loop comprised of the Iron Mountain Trail and the AT.

Is your fiance coming on the hike? He/she will murder you.

My hiking partner and I did this hike about five years ago in June. It looks relatively easy on the map, but it's brutal. All the ridgelines are parallel, and the trail crosses them perpendicularly. So you climb 1000 or 1500 feet, cross the ridge, drop to the valley, climb the next ridge, drop to the valley, etc. Over and over again.

For thru-hikers, they are in great shape by the time they hit central VA, and this is just a roller coaster. For section hikers, well, the good news is that there are plenty of places to hide your body. :)

Sorry, I kidnapped this thread... Does starting at rt 621 and hiking to Daleville make it more doable? that's 40 miles and one less ascent I think. I want miles! 311 to Daleville looks too short for two nights....

I'm really not sure -- it's hard to figure out how many miles other people can hike :) I would be comfortable with 40 miles in three days, if I had three full days for it (i.e., not trying to be done by noon for a long drive home).

We did 42-Daleville in four tough days. Well, three and a half really, we were in Daleville for a late lunch. 311 to Daleville would be a nice overnight, but yeah, too short for a three day weekend. You could do 42-311, but then you are skipping the best part, the reward for all that hard work. :) Looks like 621-Daleville skips one of the ridgelines, so that's knocking off a good amount. Certainly easier than all 50 miles....

Yeah, I'm thinking 621 to Daleville... If I can get a shuttle there.... Thanks for input!
