Right to Hike is hosting the 8th annual Ella's Run, in memory of Meredith Hope Emerson. For those who are unfamiliar, Meredith was murdered while hiking in north GA on New Year's Day, 2008. If you want more info, there are several threads on WB about this tragedy.

Georgia’s Own Credit Union Commits as Presenting Sponsor
Right to Hike, Inc. is proud to announce the 8th Annual Ella’s Run Presented by Georgia’s Own Credit Union. This year will, again, feature the traditional 5K course that participants can choose to run or walk, as well as the popular one mile fun run/walk. The event will take place at The Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center located in Buford, Georgia.
Right to Hike, Inc. was founded to honor the life of Meredith Hope Emerson who lost her life while hiking in the North Georgia Mountains on New Year’s Day, 2008. Emerson was a Buford, Georgia resident who loved the outdoors, her black lab, Ella, and her community. The main goals of this non-profit is to continue to contribute to the things Meredith loved most in life and strive to make the outdoors a safer place that people can enjoy without fear. “Ella’s Run is such a special day for all of us. It is amazing to see all the runners and walkers come out to celebrate Meredith’s memory with their families and dogs. Last year was our highest attended run to date and that shows a lot. I know Meredith always smiles down on us and makes sure the weather is perfect,” says Julia Karrenbauer, President of Right to Hike, Inc.
As in years past, this event will continue to encourage participants and spectators to bring their dogs to enjoy this wonderful day. Registration will include the race, a custom long sleeve t-shirt, and a festival complete with food, a beer garden, door prizes and vendors. Ella’s Run will once again welcome Georgia’s Own Credit Union as the Presenting Sponsor for the event. “Georgia’s Own is thrilled to join Ella’s Run as presenting sponsor once again this year and to be a part of the numerous contributions they’re making to the hiking community in North Georgia and beyond. Somehow, each year becomes more special and more impactful than the last and that is a true testament to the way Meredith lived her life and inspired others to live theirs,” expressed by Dave Preter, President & CEO, of Georgia’s Own Credit Union.
Proceeds from this event will go towards Right to Hike’s main focus of donating emergency cell phone units to local parks, trails and greenways. Thus far, the group has donated eight phones within the Gwinnett Community. As well, Right to Hike continues to support local humane societies with charitable contributions from the event.
“We feel fortunate to have been a part of Right To Hike’s Ella’s Run from the inception, from the friendships we formed with both the volunteers and the returning participants, it’s been a rewarding and emotional 8 years. Ella’s Run is inspired by love and I feel fortunate to be a part of it. I always run the course after everyone else is done and gone as a reminder of what it is all for and all that we accomplished. I’m hoping one year to run the race with everyone else and experience the event with all the happy faces I see when finishing,” states Sean Pfister, Event Director and Owner of IWeLife, an event planning company that helps produce 20-25 fitness related events per year.
