I tried out some tarp shelters from http://equipped.org/tarp-shelters.htm, using an 8x10 silnylon tarp, two trekking poles and eight stakes.

I also use a tyvek ground cloth and mosquito net.

The raised a-frame has good ventilation and a lot of room. If it is windy, the Diamond Fly or Arrowhead Wedge can withstand a lot of wind but are still open. In blowing rain, the Forester is a good choice, it also provides privacy, but not much ventilation. The Baker Wind Shed is pretty small with an 8x10 foot tarp, the Diamond Fly and Arrowhead Wedge are probably better choices.

Here is an interesting enclosed tarp shelter pitch using a 3mx3m tarp:

I set up the Strong Hexamid (at 4:45) with an 8x10 foot tarp. With the darts on the 8 foot section, the interior was just right for a 6 foot tall person. Using two hiking poles at 135mm in an inverted vee provided lots of room down the middle. An excellent enclosed one man shelter with room for gear and sitting up, using an 8x10 tarp, two light carabiners, two trekking poles, six stakes and two guys to tighten down the darts. Next time I will take 4 more stakes to test out the awning and to tighten down the sides in the middle.

It takes some learning to set it up the first time, but it gets easier.

Some other good setups:

OMG, I get claustrophobic just looking at those. I don't see why one wouldn't use a hex tarp like those that hammock hangers use. Would probably hang it lower without the hammock...

These are super light and can work extremely well. Read The Complete Walker. Colin Fletcher was doing this back in the 1960's.
It's all in the setup, you need to know what you are doing.

Went to an airshow / fly-in over the weekend (Sun n Fun). There was a military heritage display there and I was enjoying looking at all the things they did with tarps... they were the old heavy canvas tarps, but they had a whole camp set up in various pup-tents, awnings in front of canvas wall tents, and several different shelter types.... then I see this thread....
gets my wheels turning with ideas...
