I was just going to install a GPS trail tracker app on my iPhone and found out there are dozens of them. Anyone got a preference or suggestion?

The first one that I found that seems to fill my needs is BackCountry Navigator, but that's Android-only. I've heard good things about Gaia GPS and MotionX, but since I don't have an iOS device, I haven't tried them.

I use Motion-X for lightweight trail work outs and simple tracking needs. Anything that would need navigation in the back country I use the Garmin GPS.

I've used Gaia GPS on my iPhone and love it. Works great and all the info you'll need.

For more than just occasional use to verify location, skip the phone apps and get a hand held GPS. Use of any tracking app will kill a phone battery very quickly.
