I've never read a bigger snob article.

I made it three paragraphs before muttering "what a load of crap" and moving on to more productive wastes of my time. How far did you get?

I was going to leave a comment, but you need a boston globe account to do so.

Ah, yes, but to the "uninitiated masses" whose only contact with the trail may have been "A Walk in the Woods" (and perhaps a road-crossing sign as they go whizzing past in their car), it reads well! So it helps to sell newspapers. Gives new meaning to the phrase "Money talks, and bu//$h!t walks"....

Well, yes, the third paragraph in which the author contends that there is an AT social hierarchy with thru-hikers on top, then section hikers, then day hikers, etcetera, was pretty annoying (the author, by the way, is a section hiker, so she was not putting herself at the top of the pyramid) and I'm guessing that's what previous posters are reacting to. The rest of the article I found more perceptive and well written. She definitely "gets" that trail magic goes way beyond trail feeds and she captures the comradery among hikers well. I read at the end that this was an excerpt from a book about hiking the AT from this writer that will be published this December.

She apparently hasn't interviewed the experts on WhiteBlaze that know every inch of the trail without ever seeing every inch of the trail.

Hell...she didn't even use the "hike your own hike" mantra a single time.

Nope, she probably relied on "experts" who walked it once in fair weather and never plan to step foot on it again.

Oooohhh it can get better after the first three paragraphs. Though I am wondering if Thru hikers are at the top and section hikers at the bottom...why pink blazers and aqua blazers are in the middle? I always pictured pink blazers, narco blazers, and hobo campers at the bottom.

Is "narco blazer" an original term I can copyright?
