Is there a basic list of essentials somewhere on the forum. I don't mean shelters, packs, etc... More like medicines, a whistle, compass, maps etc..?

Theyre often known as "The Ten Essentials" http://www.rei.com/learn/expert-advice/ten-essentials.html

I rather like the REI's more generic list. If you are looking for a specific list that everyone can agree on you've come to the wrong place. Every hike and every hiker is different.

REI's list is pretty good. The details of what goes in the categories really does depend on the hiker. For example, what goes in your medical kit depends on both your body and your skills. There's very little point in packing medical supplies that you don't know how to use. A lot of what goes in the categories depends, too, on where you're going, and whether the lack of something would be an inconvenience or a disaster. Fire making may not be critical in a Georgia summer, but surely is in a New England autumn.
