Well i just got into this wikipedia thing which is like a comunity encyclopedia which is edited by its readers. They have an entry on Back packing that is quite interesting to read but needs some correcting. I am far from the expert so i figure the white blaze community might have a good time with this one

there are quite a few entires on trails and hiking here and abroad.

here is the backpacking linke:

I think they are trying to explain the phenomenon of backpacking or being a backpacker (ie. europe, middle east, asia, etc.) Ususally college age or post college age people backpacking around moving from hostel to hostel, using trains (usually with a eurorail pass), public transit or their feet to get from town to town as cheaply as possible. )I tried to take as many overnight trains as possible so that I didn't have to pay for a place to stay.)
I did this for 5 months after undergrad in western and eastern europe and north africa.
Not quite the same thing as what we consider backpacking; thru, section or backpacking in general.
The purpose of the described backpacking is usually to stay in towns and cities, travel and see as much as you can with as little money as possible.
Most people don't bring tents, stoves or cookware; only a travel sheet or
sleeping bag.
There definately should be a section on what we consider backpacking here to differentiate between the two.

well the 'they' you are refering to in your reply is pretty much who ever edits the entry on Backpacking. there are many aspects to backpacking so lets throw in our community's point of view. There is an extensive list of long distance trails world wide on the wiki site including one on the appalachian trail.

I just found it funny that there was a total lack of mention about the backpacking we are all use to

There are two different entries in the wikipedia for backpacking. One is named Backpacking (Travel), which is what the link provided will take you too. The other is Backpacking (Wilderness), the type we all know and love here on WhiteBlaze.

We do. Look at the navigation bar below the logo and you will find a link named "Links"

Wikipedia also has a page for the Appalachian Trail (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appalachian_trail). The state sections could use some more description. I don't see why this page couldn't be expanded (possibly with subpages) to something like the Databook or Companion. Folks who provide services along the trail could add in their own information.

We had a Wiki up on WhiteBlaze for a long time but no-one ever contributed to it. So we removed the link.
