2012 mountain house chicken noodles....would you eat it?

Mountain House's website says their meals should taste brand new for at least 12 years. Their stuff is freeze dried and much of what they sell is to survivalist types who want to store this stuff for 25 years or more.

Is 2012 the expiration date? If it is, I'd pass.

Mountain house has ongoing testing of their products. They say at least 12 years...it used to be 10, but they've since opened up 12 year old stuff and it was still good quality. A lot of expiration date stuff is pretty arbitrary.

Generally its not that the food is unsafe as much as the flavor is "off" . Long distance hikers are probably going to have a higher tolerance for an "off" flavor rather than a weekender.
I have heard the same with MREs, the food will be inedible due to flavor long before it goes bad. (of course some folk consider some of the meals inedible when new).

Heck I've eaten canned food past the experation date. As long as the package still had it's deal intact it should be just fine. As others have said the taste might not be the best but doubt it'll kill ya.

Haha. Yeah the line from crock Dundee comes to mind ya can live on it but it tastes like dung. I've never been a fan of MREs or dehydrated stuff like MH.

The only two foods in the US that REQUIRE AN EXPIRATION DATE are baby formula and baby food. Everything else is solely up to the manufacturer as the date has nothing to do with safety and only pertains to freshness. It is a good marketing gimmick for the manufacturer. They sell a lot more when people throw out perfectly good food because they think it is bad.
