Gonna be hiking next week from Springer to hopefully NC. Anything I should be concerned about? I would think would all the recent rain, water should not be an issue at the shelters. Thanks.

Good call. Its not orange, but you think if I picked this up, it would help?

I'll be from the GA-NC line going north next week - it may get down into the upper 20s.
I'm taking a mesh orange vest pinned on my pack plus a blaze orange cap.

We will be out there also....concerned about the cold with rain....I am hiking with a middle school aged child so have to be sure it is safe or else my wife will kill me.....

A little cool weather will be wonderful. I sweat my arse off even with temps in 50s.

Daytime temps in 40s is great, and nights in the 30 s with low humidity so everything isnt sticky, is what its all about. Just throw on layer when stop hiking before get cold.

Downside, leaves will drop and deep leaves obscure the trail in some areas. This isnt an issue for experienced who just feel where the trail intuitively goes, but newbs tend to get nervous in sections poorly blazed.

We are headed out this weekend from Springer to Unicoi Gap and then from Standing Indian Mt to Fontana Dam the following week. I have an orange vest for my pack and looking forward to the cooler weather! :) Hope to see you all on the trail!

Technically, its red (picante to be exact, lol), but I think its close enough. I may just get that and maybe wear a vest or a orange hat. Hopefully the hunters in that area are aware there is a huge trail that people like to walk on and don't shoot me.

I picked up a blaze orange ballcap at Walmart for under $5, in the sports/hunting section. Highly visible, per actual field test. While the overwhelming majority of hunters are responsible, and will ID the target clearly before pulling the trigger, the blaze orange is your best protection should you come across the exception.
