I am looking for a jacket and need advise on which one to pick.

Haglofs Down Jacket - $135 - 5.6 Oz - My concern here would be that it is not synthetic fill, so if when it gets wet...

Sierra Designs DriDown Sweater Jacket $70 - 11 oz - Cheaper and synthetic, but heavier.

Or I could get a cheaper Down Jacket for $40 bucks from Costco, is it really worth $100 bucks for the weight savings?...

I just got an email from Mountain Hardware.
They have their Ghost Whisper down jacket darn cheap. Not many sizes though.

I really like my The Northface Thermoball (comes with and without a hood). It is synthetic material so keeps you warm even if it gets wet, super lightweight and packs in its own pocket. Check it out: https://www.thenorthface.com/shop/mens-jackets-vests-insulated-thermoball/mens-thermoball-full-zip-jacket-2?variationId=BUX

Life is full of ups and downs! Hike on!

The Costco jacket is pretty decent for the price.

The SD DriDown jacket is actually down, not synthetic.

I've been using down insulation on the AT for years and haven't died yet. :)

Not that I have so much experience in this department, but I got one of these without the hood, and I loved it so much that I got the vest version of it, which REI may still have on sale, but even if they don't, you can get it from Costco for about $90.

Go with the $40 dollar down jacket and spend your money on a GREAT UL rain jacket to cover yourself when it gets wet out.

I like the principal of a semi disposable down jacket, when the weather warms up it gives the option of tossing in a hiker box vs shipping or carrying

I'd spend $$ on a solid proven product...i.e. Montbell, MH etc...that said my pup loves his Costco down vest turned into a sleeping bag...

I just acquired the Hagolfs LIM jacket. It's extremely light but not a replacement for a warmer down jacket. For true late fall and winter use youd have to seriously layer under it anyway so you might save money and ultimately weight by buying their heavier belay parka. I live in south Texas and do all of my backpacking in warmer weather and travel in the summer so the LIM is exactly what I needed. Fit is slim and athletic so size up if you decide to layer. For what it is, I'd say it's worth $130.

Also hagolfs is top notch stuff and fits my longer lanky body well.
