How close was he to getting off due to the statute of limitations? Does that apply?

Starchild that link might offer some insight. However it's my understanding that he was actually indicted in 2009 at the time of the ongoing crime. And I'm sure flight from prosecution stops any sort of limitations clock.

I believe you are correct in that.

His problem was that he was an accountant in Kentucky and stole from a big corporation. Should have been a Wall Street banker stealing from little guys. Could've gotten away with a hundred times that amount ... and absolutely no risk of jail.

The statute of limitations in Kentucky are pretty strict...but as others have said, you can just flee prosecution and run out the clock...the clock stops as soon as charges are filed. But in Kentucky there pretty much is no statute of limitations for felonies, and I'd assume the amount he stole is a felony.

Should say "can't just flee prosecution and run out the clock."

He's apparently cut a deal to plead to one count of wire fraud and they will drop the other 74 counts in the indictment in exchange for telling them where the money (what remains) is and paying back the rest, including insurance money that was payed out. He could still get up to 20 years on the one count. Maybe he invested the money well? http://www.wcpo.com/news/state/state-kentucky/appalachian-trail-hiking-embezzlement-suspect-to-change-plea
