Earl Shaffer's 1948 diary of the first AT thru-hike has now been transcribed by the Smithsonian. I was lucky enough to do some of the transcription on this project including the page that documents his climb of Katahdin. It's a great read.

You can find the diary here: https://transcription.si.edu/pdf_files/6734.pdf

As a related topic.
There's a 2 volume set about the early hikers, up to about when the number of thru hikers per year hit 2 didgets. I think it's titled " hiking the Applachian trail" ?? An interexting read.

That was an interesting account. Sure would be neat if his photos of his hike were available too.

You can find his '48 hike photos here http://earlshaffer.com/publications.html in his "Walking with Spring: Earl's 1948 Appalachian Trail slideshow.

I don't own it but according to the description those pictures are included.
