Thanks for posting the pics, those sections don't get used as much as some of the others.
You didn't say if you overnighted, if not that is aggressive day hiking (20.5 miles)

Thanks Bob. We broke this one up into a two day hike. A single day would be possible, but there is a lot to see.

Your right, we didn't see a single other hiker. The trail was fairly well maintained. Good signage, blazing, even bridges. I could tell the volume of foot traffic was low. I'm not sure why it's a great section of trail. At the Pitts just North of 278 we had to re route around one area. Lots of down trees and water filled a pit where the trail ran. The views at Davis Shelter (where we took Lunch) were great. I could spend the whole day there. There was noticable ATV useage in many areas (hunting season), but only pressed leaves and light tire tracks -no damage. As I mentioned above wear your Orange. This area is hunted with several new and old tree stands/ shooting houses along the trail.

Several excellent shelters and water sources. We stayed at Hawkins Hollow shelter which now has to be one of my favorites on the Pinhoti. It's trail log indicated a group had been there the night before.

The wind along Indian Mountain dropped the windchill by quite a bit on the morning of 1/1/16 and we were putting clothes back on pretty quickly.

I will be doing this section again.

Is the Hawkins hollow shelter new? It appears to be. I don't remember it when we went earlier in 2015.

It is a fairly new shelter. I believe it was built in 2013. It's very close to the older tent platform, just to the South.

I stayed at Hawkins Hollow shelter in Jan. 2014 and it was about 75% complete.
