I searched good-ol'-google but didn't find anything useful. If not, are other water purification tablets safe for dogs? What do you all use?

the first question that comes to mind-are dogs affected by Giardia and other micro-organisms?

They can, which is why I was asking.

Dogs lick their and other dog's butts, roll around on dead animals and drink from mud puddles. I wouldn't worry about a dog's drinking water.

You could ask your vet.

Ditto. You can give them all the purified water you want, but how do you stop them from drinking whatever and whenever?

Also:

Disinfection with iodine or chlorine has a low to moderate effectiveness in killing Giardia (Taken from the CDC Guide to Drinking Water Treatment and Sanitation for Backcountry and Travel Use)

Absolutely they get Giardia and they have the same symptoms people do.

At Amundsen's base camp for going to the South Pole, they built the privy over the dog kennels, so the dogs could get the remaining energy out of the human poop. They just aren't very dainty eaters.

Ask your vet about lepto prevention/treatment.
