If you're gonna drink it, spell it right.
Maker's Mark, Maker's 46. A Tennessee sour mash like George Dickel is nice too. A leakproof Nalgene bottle of appropriate size.

The ABC store here in Bryson City still has Jack Daniels green label on the shelves - the finest of all hiking whiskeys - put it in a titanium bottle for the ultralite experience.

Took Jack Daniel Honey on my last trip. Rebottled in a smartwater bottle with flip top.
Never leaked and could use the top to back flush my sawyer if needed.

I carry fireball, it comes by the Liter, and in a light plastic bottle. When bottle was empty last year, used as unfiltered water container for shelter, and had replenished said supply in Front royal...3 liters, 7 days, 100 miles. Not bad :bse

I find the best way is to convince your friend/hiking partner to carry the bottle. Let them worry about it.

As previously noted alcohol is lighter than water, so it stands to reason that you should go with the highest proof you can find. To multipy the weight savings, take a whole lot of it.

When it's empty, put water in it and the water tastes real good.

Personally, I wouldn't waste 12 oz on my back carrying bourbon. This is an excuse to break out the good stuff -- single malt scotch. Glenfiddich.

But there's no accounting for some people's taste.

Last year I was in town with my new-found hiking buddies, and one of them insisted that I refill my flask with Irish. I know, sounds like science fiction, but there you go. He was a good guy, so I bought a pint of Jameson's, filled my flask and gave him the rest. He didn't have anything to put it in, so he passed it on to the other guy. A couple of days later, we're killing off the last of my flask at Wesser Bald, drinking toasts from water bottle caps, and the other guy produces that almost-empty bottle that he'd been dragging around since Franklin. I couldn't believe he still had it. Must have weighed a pound, empty.

We graciously lightened his burden by four ounces.

I think season and environment matter. During my section hike in Vermont last my partner and I each carried gin which we would mix at the end of the day (usually early afternoon) with powdered lemonade for a lightweight version of G&T's - one of my favorite memories of the trip is sitting on the boardwalk at the west side of Stratton Pond driniking gin and tonics and watching the shadows grow across the face of Stratton Mountain. This weekend we'll be up on Cheoah Bald (assuming the weather's ok) and we'll switch to rum and hot chocolate. whiskey is kind of a spring and fall beverage.

Thats the problem with all liquor containers: they all leak, seriously, from the top.

I agree :-)

Store it in a sanitized yellow bottle with turret nozzle cap for direct dispensing into mouth or stove.

Does it get lighter if older ?
No, just woodier.

Should I get the highest proof ?
For me personally the 100 - 120 range is the sweet spot. Off the top of my head some good reasonably priced ones are:

Rittenhouse Rye at 100 (actually this is a rye whiskey not a bourbon)
Old Grand Dad bottled in bond at 100
Wild Turkey at 101
Fighting Cock at 103
Old Grand Dad at 114
Knob Creek at 120

Lightest container ??
I use a 375 ml plastic bottle that used to contain some type of alcohol (i.e. Smirnov vodka, George Dickel, etc.)

Smaller container might not work well ;0)
Depends on how much you want. Usually if I carry 12 ounces for a week I end up coming out with some left...I just have it for a little sipping at night.

I find that I just don't want booze very much when I'm on the trail. I'm not sanctimonious about it, and I'll have the occasional drink or three in town, but I just don't get the hankering to drink when I'm Out There.

If I did, it would likely be Scotch, not bourbon. The open bottle that I currently have in the house is Isle of Jura.

If you're goal is an UL Bourbon treat it similar to trail food. With food the usual UL focus is on high cal/oz ratios to save on wt while maximizing calories. With UL Bourbon focus on maximizing proof to get the job done by needing less. Or you could find a meadow of cow patties at night and...Never mind.

There are a few brands that you can get in a resealable aluminum bottle. Mostly Vodkas. But I did see not too long ago a bourbon that came in a gift set with a couple of tumblers and a flask. All aluminum.

Personally I think single malts or high proof alcohols would taste disgusting in aluminum but I have yet to try it.

But my favorite bedtime outdoor drink is either my personal hot toddy recipe or "apple jack" which is 4oz whiskey to 1-2oz apple cider. Heat the apple cider till steaming, then add he whiskey. By the time you're done with the 3rd you'll sleep like a baby. Add some nuts as snacks to increase your metabolism throughout the night for cold weather camping.

I have taken some wine in the past in one of those platy wine bags. Will higher proof alcohol store in one of those? or would it damage them? they don't weight much so very little penalty in weight until you refill.

When working in the cellar at the winery I work at, we often get various bulk wines shipped to us in plastic bladders (weird, I know). I've never seen any instance of erosion due to alcohol %, just lack of care really. It shouldn't be a problem.

Sunny Brook.... I had a twitching in my left eyelid that I couldn’t solve, and I didn’t dare another visit to the doctor. Cutting coffee did nothing, so I cracked the Sunny Brook. Problem solved, or so far as I can remember. First swig started out smooth, followed by the burn. Second swig made me check the bottle to make sure I wasn’t drinking Listerine. This one gives you the feel of vomit working its way back up your throat. After that I went for a helper. This is technically a “blended whiskey”, and if you cannot find this brand in your own liquor store, try blending some of the other whiskeys on this list with paint thinner, and you should come close.
